A reminiscence by Linda:?Talking about the snow, we did have some beautiful white xmases in times gone by, Grandad used to save all his threepenny bits from one xmas to another and on xmas eve all us grandchildren {there was 9 of us} used to queue up for our "pay packets" we had about 11 shillings each and that was quite a good amount in those days, I?m talking very early 60s when we all lived in Orchard cottages. We had the best ever xmas parties at Sompting school, everyone brought in a packet of biscuits or cakes and Mrs Holgate made the sandwiches and red jelly {always red jelly} we had orange squash to drink and the school was decorated with the metallic strips that the milk bottle tops had been stamped out of, {best decorations I have ever seen} they had obviously been rescued from the local dairy. Before the party though, we all went over to the reading room and I remember one year Class 1 did a concert miming to the latest chart toppers, {on stage} I myself was with 2 other girls, who had far more confidence than I but I didn?t want to be left out! and we sang along to "Downtown" by Petula Clark. I don?t think I was very good but I will never forget it?.
